THE ST JAMES

The St James somehow snuck in under the radar. While accolades were being piled on Cira Centre for being the first office tower in over a decade; while hope and controversy were being piled on One Pennsylvania Plaza then Comcast Center; while the real estate market slowly climbed and then exploded, ending its secret . . . while all these things were happening, Clark Realty was quietly building a 45 story, concrete apartment tower.

Designed by Chicago residential highrise experts Solomon Cordwell Buenz, its curved sides, slanted roof and open windows are a breath of fresh air towering over Washington Square. At 498', it eclipsed the PSFS Building as the tallest building east of Broad Street. In early 2005, rumors swirled about the sale of the St James (barely a year old) for a change from apartment to condo, but phillyskyline.com is unsure if that has happened yet. As far as we know, it is still an apartment tower with 301 units on 45 floors.
