In the Autumn of 1683 a little group of emigrants from Crefeld, in Germany, went out from Philadelphia to make a settlement called Germantown, and no doubt the path they followed was the same which the Indians used long before that time. Mr. [John Fanning] Watson, writing about 1825, says, "the present aged Jacob Keyser was told by A. Cook, a primitive inhabitant, that he could well remember Germantown Street as being an Indian footpath going through laurel bushes".
–Townsend Ward, 1881

GERMANTOWN AVENUE

One of the oldest and most historic of avenues in America, Germantown Avenue snakes its way to the north and west through some of Philadelphia's poorest and wealthiest neighborhoods. Starting in Northern Liberties, the eight and a half mile street shows us every aspect of Philadelphia life before it exits through Northwestern Avenue in Chestnut Hill and becomes Germantown Pike. Poverty and prosperity, blight and renewal and some impressive monuments of American History are all there for the viewing. So take a ride and explore all that the Old Main Street has to offer. You may be pleasantly surprised.
