The Philadelphia Zoo was the first of its kind in the United States. It received its charter in 1859 and officially opened at 34th & Girard in 1874, in time for the Centennial Expo just up the way in Parkside. Over 1500 animals reside on over 40 acres, with special exhibits like the PECO Primate Reserve and the new-for-2006 Bank of America Big Cat Falls. The four elephants which call Philadelphia home will soon be moved to more spacious reserves in Maryland and Tennessee, a sad reality for the zoo but a better day for the elephants. On their name, I visited the zoo on Columbus Day, which seems like a very, very popular day for kids under the age of 10.
